Qatar Chamber Chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim Al Thani inaugurated a seminar titled “Arbitration: a view from Qatar and beyond” at the Hilton Doha Hotel.
The symposium was organised by the Qatar International Centre for Conciliation and Arbitration (QICCA) at the Qatar Chamber, in cooperation with Al Sulaiti Law Firm, Thani Bin Ali Al Thani Law Firm, and Sultan Al Abdulla & Partners. The event also saw the participation of a number of experts in the field of arbitration including QICCA Board Member for International Relations Dr Sheikh Thani bin Ali Al Thani.
Sheikh Khalifa said that Qatar’s alternative dispute resolution mechanism has significantly bolstered the confidence of foreign investors in the country, the recent improvements in Qatar’s arbitrational landscape have gone a long way in stimulating investments and strengthening the business environment.
The country’s adoption of commercial arbitration helped build the country’s strategic partnerships and alliances, he said.
Qatar made great progress in developing laws and legislation related to foreign investment, which has strengthened its role at the regional and international levels, he added.
The symposium discussed a number of topics related to the implementation of international arbitral awards, the challenge of arbitrators’ judgments based on practical local experiences, the impact of the invalidity action on the implementation of the arbitration award, the implementation of arbitration judgments, the extent to which English courts can use the seizure of assets, the interim procedures in arbitration, and the challenge of the appointment of the arbitrator.
